About Kiki

Kiki Caporn

Kiki has advised students on their US university application essays since 2016, bringing a decade of experience to the highly individual process of developing a compelling and cohesive written application. Over the course of her career, she has worked as a specialist essay advisor for leading US admissions consultancies including Edvice, Arcus Advisory, and UES.

She studied English Literature at Stanford University, having chosen Stanford over an offer from the University of Cambridge. She graduated with honours in three years and was both a Levinthal Writing Scholar and a Chappell-Lougee Scholar.

Kiki specialises in the written elements of US university applications, advising students from initial strategy through the Common App essay and university-specific supplemental essays. She works closely with each student to ensure that every piece is distinctive, accomplished, and contributes strategically to the strength of the application as a whole.

Her approach is highly personalised. She helps students navigate the often unfamiliar conventions of American admissions writing while ensuring that their essays remain entirely authentic to their own voice, experiences, and character. The aim is not simply to produce excellent individual essays, but to build a thoughtful, cohesive essay portfolio that presents the strongest possible picture of who the student is.

Kiki works online with students worldwide who are applying to US universities. Alongside her individual advising, she has regularly led workshops on US university admissions essays at leading UK schools, including Charterhouse, Sevenoaks School, and Dulwich College.

What Past Clients Say

The Student Perspective

A client admitted to UC Berkeley

Kiki Caporn has been absolutely revolutional during my university applications. Sixth Form was a particularly stressful experience, and for me it was especially so, as I was intending to apply to both the US and Oxbridge.

In the first session Kiki and I had together, a lot of that stress had faded away, as she focused more on getting to know me as a person, immediately putting me at ease. The conversations we had were so personal to me, and had actually made me realise a lot about myself that I didn’t really think about before. As a result, applying for university in the States came a little easier, because Kiki guided me to find a stronger sense of myself, my personality and most importantly, my voice.

When you begin the essay writing process, it seems incredibly daunting, mostly because you don’t know where to start, but with Kiki’s incredible honesty and great specificity in her feedback, my essays shaped up into something that flowed beautifully. The best part was that Kiki really pushes you rather than doing it herself. She is so incredibly patient and supportive that by the end of the application process, you become a great writer yourself.

What was originally daunting, all of a sudden made sense. One thing about Kiki is that once she commits to helping you, she really commits. Her dedication, flexibility, wonderful support and honest feedback is what got me into UC Berkeley, where I am absolutely thriving. So, I would recommend Kiki as many times as I can, because she is truly a wonderfully talented writer, teacher and person.

The Parent Perspective

A parent of clients admitted to UPenn (Wharton) and Georgetown

We cannot recommend Kiki Caporn highly enough. Neither of us went to university in the US, so when our eldest decided to apply there, we had no idea what the process involved or what a strong application looked like. From the outset, it was clear that Kiki was completely on top of things. She set out a clear roadmap of what needed to happen and when, across testing, extracurriculars and essays, and kept everything moving.

Her communication was perhaps her greatest strength. She worked directly with our boys, spoke to us separately, and brought the three of us together when it mattered. We were informed every step of the way, and were never in doubt about where things stood. We never once worried about missed deadlines or drifting priorities because we knew that, if anything needed attention, Kiki would raise it to us early, before it became a problem.

That gave our boys a real sense of independence and agency without compromising the high standards she expected of them. It also allowed us to be far more hands-off, which took pressure off them and let them put their best foot forward. When our younger son came to apply, we were delighted to work with Kiki again. There was naturally some overlap in the roadmap and advice, but much of her guidance differed from what she had set out for his brother. It was obvious that she had taken the time to understand each of our sons individually and that nothing about her approach was one-size-fits-all.

Our eldest was admitted to Georgetown and youngest to Penn. We remain enormously grateful to Kiki for her unwavering dedication and support, and would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone pursuing higher education in the United States.

What does a US college essay consultant do?

A US college essay consultant specialises in the written elements of American university applications, including the Common App essay and university-specific supplemental essays. Kiki supports students from strategy and topic selection through drafting, editing and final refinement, while considering how each essay strengthens the application as a whole.

Do you work with international students applying to US universities?

Yes. Kiki works online with students worldwide who are applying to US universities, including students in the United States, UK, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. All advising is conducted individually over Zoom.

When should students start their Common App and US college essays?

Kiki recommends beginning the Common App essay in July, allowing time for careful brainstorming, development and editing before moving on to university-specific supplemental essays.

Do you help with both the Common App essay and supplemental essays?

Yes. Kiki advises students across the full essay portfolio, from the Common App essay through to university-specific supplemental essays. Each essay is considered strategically so that the written application is as strong, distinctive and cohesive as possible.

Can you help edit an existing Common App or college application essay?

Yes. Kiki first assesses an existing essay for the strength of its concept, content and overall effectiveness. If it has strong potential, she helps develop and refine it; if not, she works with the student to identify and create a stronger Common App essay from the beginning.

How do you choose the strongest topics for college application essays?

Kiki uses extensive one-to-one brainstorming to uncover ideas rooted in each student's individual experiences, interests and perspective, rather than generic topics. The strongest ideas are then considered strategically in relation to the wider application and complete essay portfolio.

What makes a strong Common App essay?

A strong Common App essay is personal, specific and revealing. It should give an admissions reader meaningful insight into the student's character or perspective while sounding unmistakably like the student themselves. Strong writing matters, but choosing the right story is equally important.

Do you work with students applying to Ivy League, Stanford and other highly selective US universities?

Yes. Kiki has extensive experience advising students applying to Ivy League institutions, Stanford and other leading US universities. As a Stanford alumna herself, she also brings first-hand experience of the US university environment to her work.

How are US college essays different from other university application essays?

American university essays are very different from application writing used elsewhere, including the traditional UCAS personal statement. US universities use essays to understand a student's character, experiences, perspective and potential contribution to their university community, requiring a distinctly different approach to both content and style.

Why work with a specialist US college essay consultant?

US college essays play an important strategic role within holistic admissions. A specialist can devote significant time to topic selection, essay strategy, development and editing, while considering how the full portfolio works together to create the strongest possible written application and maximise the student's chances of admissions success.

How many students does Kiki work with each year?

Kiki works with a maximum of six students each year, allowing her to devote significant time and individual attention to every student throughout the complete college essay process.
